The Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN) has recently published a comprehensive list of available museum mobile apps from across the country. Full details are available through CHIN’s most recent TechWatch scan, which provides a seasonal review of museums and technology. Here are the highlights:

The McCord Museum’s free iPhone app Urban Museum MTL provides another way to discover Montreal and visit the places where history was made. Users can superimpose some 150 historic images from the Notman Photographic Archives onto present-day views of emblematic Montreal locations. The McCord also offers a free iPhone app for your visit to the museum, where you can watch videos, comment on the objects being showcased, and create a list of your favourite items that you can email to your friends.

The Art Gallery of Ontario now offers a free app for iPhone that allows you to access information about the gallery and its offerings from wherever you are.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization provides an app for iPhone and Blackberry that provides one-stop access to museum information such as floor plans, calendar of events, current exhibitions, IMAX films, and also includes guided audio tours.

The Montréal Museums app allows you to access the complete programming of 38 Montréal museums. Thanks to geolocation technology, the free Montréal Museums iPhone app can help you find nearby museums, activities, ongoing exhibitions, opening hours and more.

The free iPhone app from the Musée de la Civilisation in Quebec City offers a comprehensive guide of the museum, more information on the collections, and an interactive quiz game designed for the current special exhibit ROME.

The Pickering Museum Village’s app uses augmented reality to provide an exciting new way to visit this historic village in Pickering, ON. Visitors can view a map of the village, access information about all the buildings, but also point their iPhone at any building and instantly see old photos of it and learn more about its history.

The ROM’s Museum Guide app from the Royal Ontario Museum allows visitors all of the logistic information they will need to plan their visit. It also offers detailed information for when you are at the museum, as well as a selection of audio guides.

The Air Defence Museum in Bagotville, QC, has released a free app for iPad and iPhone that offers the only guided visit of an operating military base.
