Did you know that the movie The Great Escape has a link to Canada? This movie, based on facts, tells the story of allied prisoners who escaped from Stalag Luft III, a camp located in the east of Germany. There were nine Canadians amongst the prisoners. According to the original plan, 200 prisoners were supposed to escape. However, only 79 airmen managed to do so in the night of March 24 to 25, 1944. Of these escapees, only three made it to freedom while the others were either recaptured or executed.
virtualmuseum.ca commemorates the sacrifices and the bravery of the Canadian airmen who fought in the Second World War. The story of these heroic Canadians is told in the exhibit For Valour: Canadian Airmen and the Victoria Cross. This exhibit includes interesting educational resources for students such as interactive posters.
