THE GRAPE GROWERS OF ONTARIO IS HELPING FARMERS TRANSITION INTO FUTURE SUCCESS
In the 1920's farmers realized that they did not need to plant any more vineyards as they were able to grow twice the amount on existing vineyards through the use of better cultivation techniques and fertilization. This resulted in an increase in profits for the growers. During this same decade the Niagara Grape Growers and the new Co-operative company merged to form the Niagara Peninsula Growers with the purpose of sharing resources and increasing profits for the growers.
The Grape Growers of Ontario, formed in 1947 as the Ontario Grape Growers' Marketing Board, is an organization dedicated to the protection of grape growers in Ontario. The organization strived to make sure that growers received fair payment for their produce and gave them representation. The Grape Growers also worked with wineries and juice production factories to obtain contracts for the growers. In 1948 the organization opened a co-operative to process grape juice and this location would eventually be run by Welch's. In 2002 the organization's name was changed to the Grape Growers of Ontario. This organization was preceded by the Niagara District Grape Growers who represented members in the early 1900's.
In the last fifty years there has been an evolution in the process for growing grapes. Previously farmers divided their focus on producing grapes for the fresh market and grapes for wine production. In recent years local farmers have reduced the production of grapes for eating and increased the production of grapes used in the wine industry.
