Woodcarvings by Pat Patterson of Renfrew Ontario Canada

Carver Pat Patterson of Renfrew Ontario with Pembroke Centennial Totem Pole.
My dad Abe Patterson lived in center town Pembroke and he was a
world famous woodcarver from the 1920's until the 1960's. I grew
up here and spent many of my younger days in his shop and some
of his skills rubbed off on me so to speak. During my early years
from the 1940's to the 1960's I would help my father getting trees in
the forests and bringing them home. Some of the larger projects he
carved such as life size bears, lumber jacks or totem poles I helped
him with . Smaller woodcarvings such as moose and deer were
made with a watchful eye from my father and his expertise was
much appreciated. My dads' home made knives were used for
carving and these were made from strait razor shaving blades
which he received from a Police Captain on the Detroit Police
Force. In 1963 I became a Police Officer and worked and spent the
rest of my life in Renfrew. This left little time for woodcarving but
from time to time I would carve walking sticks .walking canes
relief carvings and small totems. As I got older more time was
found for carvings such as large totem poles, cigar store Indians.
Through the years most of these carvings were given away freely
with payment to me being received by the glee in the eyes of the
beholder .At my leisure I continue to carve at my small shop in
Renfrew when the mood strikes me.

Chief Bonnechere:
Born on the banks of the mighty Bonnechere River during the summer of 2004. His features are pure Algonquin, finely carved and ferocious. His thighs and torso would make the Venus De Milo weep stone tears of regret to think of the nights she wasted with puny gentlemen on Mount Olympus. He is a poet's dream of manly strength and vigor.

This cane is carved from the lowly Staghorn Sumac tree. It's lightness, strength and beauty of the green colored grain of the wood , belies the fact that most people overlook it as it grows along the hillsides and roadsides of the Upper Ottawa Valley. The beauty of a thicket of Sumac having turned red at first frost is indescribable.
