Frank La Roche (1853-1934) settled in Seattle
in 1888/89. He made many trips to Alaska beginning in 1890 and ending in 1902. In August
1897, he left Seattle to photograph the gold rush and probably returned to Dyea in
October. En Route to the Klondike... Chilkoot Pass and
Skaguay Trail was published in that year. The La Roche studio was purchased by
Edward Curtis in 1900 but La Roche's Klondike negatives were retained by him and now
reside at the University of Washington.
