The dwelling answers first and foremost to a basic need - that of lodging. Through the times, various cultural, social, economic, technological, material, and climatic factors have influenced the evolution of the dwelling and appearance of houses.
As per their definition, shelters do not endure and have not left much of a mark on history. The types of dwellings that follow are a representation of their times, but also answered to a variety of specific contexts throughout Canada's history.
