Well, the
Irish Moss industry started here in the late ’30s and early ’40s.
And, they always harvested on the beach and by boat. I guess there was
a little change in how the equipment they used at sea. Because years
ago they used a rake with a long pole attached to it and one of the
gentlemen was at sea and the pole broke and instead of coming back into
shore, he improvised and he put a rope around it and he threw it over
it went further and deeper and then came ropes and cables. And, today
at sea they use cables. And they cut back on the amount of rakes they
use that’s just to conserve the moss beds. |
