If the West Prince area of Prince Edward Island gave birth to fox farming the town of summerside with its established business community became its financial administrative and marketing capital. Indeed as the fox industry grew the town gained an international status of recognition. At the industries zenith in the 1920’s fur buyers from around the world came to set up shop in the store window along water street every fall. Local banks hotels and other businesses prospered. The town itself was literally surrounded by fox ranches operated by some of the industries leaders including Peter G Clark, George Callbeck, B.I. Rayner, and Lowell Handcock. From 1910 until the industries decline in the 1930’s Summerside was the undisputed Fox Capital of the world.
