The feed industry was
quite different from what it is today. Their ranchers were producing
a lot of their own feed and boiling a sort of porridge. Mixture of fish
and meat and grinding that. A lot of fish was used in the early days.
A lot of herring. I can remember taking a team of horses and wagon and
going up to the shore, the cove here… a boat had come in loaded
down with herring. We put those down in puntions, large puntions …
and salted them. We were living fairly close to a stream, a brook. We’d
have cages in the brook and we put the herring in to soak the salt out
of them for about twenty-four hours. |
