Supervising and Supporting
In the newly built prisons and penitentiaries in the 19th century, wardens and guards applied the new correctional philosophy: protect by locking up criminals; isolate inmates to get them to repent; put them to work to prepare them to return to society.
In secure prisons, paid correctional staff were from then on assigned well defined functions in the various areas of detention and supervision.
