Living Inside

Illustration of a prisoner in his cell 44 KB

With the prison’s heavy mesh doors closing behind him, the offender starts “living inside”, as they say in the coded language of the correctional system. He loses his freedom, his independence, his privacy.

He sits in a cramped cell alone or with other inmates guilty of similar offences. He has all the time in the world to ponder his actions. Until the end of the 20th century, prisoners had no rights: they endured their punishment.
