On the Rocks
Mount Uto in Glacier National Park offers good rock climbing. Some of the challenges, excitement and danger of rock climbing are evident in this 1935 image of mountaineers, including Bill Dobson, ascending a rock face on the mountain. For a long time, rock climbing was seen as an essential part of mountaineering, and some mountaineers would climb rock as preparation for expeditions. By the 1950s enthusiasts had developed rock climbing into a sport of its own.
