L'Église chrétienne identifie cette représentation de Marie, la Vierge mère, et de l'Enfant Jésus, à l'icône de l'Incarnation. Elle évoque pour les fidèles le sens et les circonstances de la naissance de Jésus ; de plus, elle les incite à s'identifier à la
Theotokos (la mère de Dieu) et à faire naître et propager l'amour divin dans le monde.
