When Jacques Cartier arrived, the St. Lawrence Valley was inhabited by various Native communities, including the St. Lawrence Iroquoians. By the beginning of the 17th century, the St. Lawrence Iroquoian population seems to have deserted the St. Lawrence Valley, while several other groups, including the Huron-Wendats and the Five-Nation Iroquois, vied for control of the area. Like their St. Lawrence Iroquoian compatriots, the Iroquoians living at Saint-Anicet left few clues as to their fate.

Nevertheless, these people's traditions may not be entirely lost, and certain communities are making an effort to ensure that they are kept alive for future generations.
