Tabla "Tijania" (drum)
Antelope skin, wood, string
Diam : 45 cm
Arab and Mediterranean Music Centre, Tunisia

This is an instrument used by female groups of a mystic congregation whose patron saint is "Sidi Ahmed Tijani". It is used in a very special way. Four women sit on the ground around the tabla and play it together using their cupped hands. Because of the exclusive use of the drum by the "Tijani", the tabla has become a sort of symbol of their order. It is used to accompany voices during the singing of the "Tijania".
