Lawren Harris’s growing interest in the spiritual side of life is apparent in his increasingly simplified, stylistic approach and the ethereal light that radiates from his canvases. He was interested in theosophy, a spiritual movement based on Hindu and Buddhist teachings, which combined the religion and philosophy of the East and West. Through his paintings, Harris wanted to lead the viewer to contemplate the divine forces in nature, and ultimately to a mystical experience of oneness with the universe. Here we see that he has reduced all forms to their basic essence, giving a sense of monumentality, permanence and timelessness.
