Frances M. Jones Bannerman was born in Nova Scotia and studied privately in Halifax with Forshaw Day. She pursued a successful professional painting career in Nova Scotia and in England where she settled after marrying her husband, British artist Hamlet Bannerman. Her painting achievements were recognized by the inclusion of her work in the exhibitions of the Royal Canadian Academy, the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon. In Edge of the Woods, three young children are picking berries at the edge of a forest. The scene is thick with rich green foliage, and the vertical composition accentuates the height of the trees.
