Heroes of the Underground Railroad
From the 1820s to the 1860s, many thousands of African American slaves escaped into Canada with the support of a secret network of sympathizers called the “Underground Railroad.” In Canada, churches operated as “terminals” on the railroad and as settlement centres, giving emergency food and shelter and directing arrivals into new settlements.
