The Maritimes, 1783-1820s


When the revolution erupted in the American colonies in 1775, Britain offered freedom to slaves who fought for the British in North America. The Americans won the war in 1783, and Black Loyalists joined the flood of refugees moving north. Though they founded one of the first free Black communities in Canada, they also suffered great hardship.
