Canada’s Abolitionists
After Britain’s 1833 abolition of slavery, Canadian abolitionists turned their attention southward. While they campaigned vigorously against American slavery, the growing community of African Canadians established churches, founded newspapers, wrote books, raised money and helped fugitives from American slavery to settle in Canada.
