The International Context of Abolition
Canada in the 19th century was a staging ground for the campaign against slavery. That struggle took place against a background of progressive laws in Britain, which outlawed the slave trade in 1807 and slavery itself in 1833. As for the United States, the fact that they hung onto slavery for another generation helped turn Canada into a refuge for escaped slaves.
