The Abolition Movement in Canada, 1793-1863


In 1793, Upper Canada passed legislation to outlaw the importation of slaves. This was the very first law in the British Empire to limit the enslavement of human beings. With this act, Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe began to position the colonies of British North America at the head of the emerging abolition movement.
