Welcome to Herschel Island! Herschel (also known as Qikiqtaruk), is located just above the 69th parallel. It is a very small island, only 14.5 kilometres long by 8 kilometres wide by 183 metres high (9 miles, by 5 miles, by 600 feet high). Just two kilometres separate the closest point of the island from the northern Yukon mainland. During the last ice age, when the sea level was 120 metres lower than it is today, the island was probably part of the mainland. Herschel Island lies in the Beaufort Sea, which is part of the Arctic Ocean. |
