The condition of the crew and ships here is excellent. No sickness and not a death up to date has occurred, but my third officer had to have a portion of the fingers of one hand amputated from frost bite. That is the only case of freezing. The last report of the other vessels at Baillie Island, written in January, was that they were safe and well.

One gasoline schooner, the Olga, has not been heard from. We presume she is wintering at Bank's Land, or Cape Perry, as she was last seen in that direction. If there, it would be very difficult, if not quite impossible, to communicate with anybody from that point this winter...

This is my third successive winter here, and not one case of scurvy have I had among my crew, and not a case has occurred among all here, to my knowledge.

Capt. Cook
