Whales were hunted commercially near Herschel Island from 1890 to about 1910.

Bowhead whales had survived centuries of native subsistence hunting (with handmade harpoons), but non-native hunters, using bomb-guns, depleted the bowheads almost to extinction in less than 20 years.
