It's strange to think that the settlement on Herschel Island was due in large part to the Victorian woman's desire for a twelve-inch waist. But just as the fashion demand for beaver hats fuelled the fur trade through the 18th century, the demand for whalebone corsets gave a new impetus to whaling and led to the establishment of the Herschel settlement. |
