The Mounties arrived in the Yukon in 1894. At that time, the Canadian government was concerned about the prevalence of US citizens in Canadian territory at a time when the border was new and in many areas still disputed. The NWMP were sent to Fort Cudahy and Fort Constantine to establish a presence for Canadian sovereignty, and to provide law and order amongst the prospectors in the area, who were mostly American.
Soon events would transpire to make the presence of the North-West Mounted Police most fortunate. The discovery of gold would lead thousands of gold seekers to the Klondike with only a small but resolute group of Mounties to maintain the laws of Canada.
