The original exhibition of Fire + Earth was co-curated by Jonathan E. Smith and Shinjin Ozaki as an expression of partnership between the Burlington Art Centre and the Itabashi Art Museum. The original exhibition of Fire + Earth took place at the Burlington Art Centre in 1997, prior to being shown at the Itabashi Art Museum in 1998. Subsequently, it was shown at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Mackenzie Art Gallery in Regina, and the Thunder Bay Art Gallery.
