Shoemaking
In eastern Canada, shoes were not easy to obtain for the settlers who lived on small farms spread over large areas of countryside - you either had to have someone send them to you from abroad, or have them made by a shoemaker. Shoes were relatively expensive, which made it worthwhile to pay a shoemaker for mending shoes. Few communities were large enough to support this important craftsman.
