Occasionally homeowners renovating an old house in the Maritimes or Ontario find a battered shoe hidden in a wall or under the floorboards. These shoes - usually those of a woman or child - are always worn out and are beyond repair. Hiding such shoes in the structure of a house was believed to bring good luck to the family that lived there. The tradition dates back for many centuries in Europe.
