Another type of fungus association involves the insects. Leaf-cutter
ants of Central and South America, and termites in Africa actually
cultivate fungi in underground gardens. The fungi seem to do
very well, as the ants and termites bring them a steady supply
of food. In exchange a certain portion of the fungi become insect
fodder. Several species of fungi have similar contracts with
the wood-boring ambrosia beetles. |
