NARROWING THE FIELD
Mycologists usually split the macro-fungi into several major groups, such as jelly fungi, bracket fungi, boletes (sponge mushrooms), gill fungi, and so on. These names are descriptive in a general way, and it's a fairly easy task to decide the group in which your specimen belongs. If you've observed some or all of the features listed above, you're ready for the next step, identifying to genus.

It's time to use a key.
