The Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation evolved from the Prince Edward Island Heritage Foundation which was established in 1970. The Museum's mandate is to study, collect, preserve, interpret and protect the Island's human and natural heritage.
The provincial museum system is a network of seven sites, with the head office at Beaconsfield Historic House in Charlottetown. The Provincial Collection comprises approximately 80 000 artifacts. Support services include exhibitions, workshops, lectures and publishing of books, brochures, a newsletter and a semi-annual history publication, the Island Magazine.
