The museum everyone is buzzing about!

Montreal's Insectarium introduces visitors to the fascinating and mysterious world of insects. This is a museum like no other, housing a collection of more than 150 000 insect specimens from the four corners of the earth, some of them frozen in time and others very much alive. The butterfly tent, the aquarium and the transparent beehive are just some of the intriguing sights awaiting visitors at this "temple" to insects.

A museum devoted to insects...what a novel idea! Since it first opened in Februrary 1990, thousandsof visitors have come to the Insectarium each year, all of them intrigued by our fascinating, little-known and too often feared partners on this planet. The Insectarium aims above all to familiarize visitors with the world of insects, creatures that play such an important role in maintaining the earth's fragile ecological balance. Itperforms three functions: educational, cultural and scientific.

The Insectarium, at your service. Has your backyard been taken over by bees or ants? Looking for a natural way to get rid of the insects that have invaded your garden? Intrigued by that long-winged insect that visits you each evening? The entomological information staff at the Insectarium will be pleased to tell you about the habits of these often misunderstood guests.

Over the years, the Insectarium has developed various tools that can be used by schools to teach students about the wondrous world of insects. These include the Entomoguide, entomological discovery boxes and teacher training sessions. The Insectarium also has an outreach division to promote its public activities by means of workshops, conferences and a liaison bulletin.

Finally, the Insectarium maintains close contact with other research centres around the world. In addition to exchanging information, it lends its support to other new museums dedicated to insects. By participating in various international programs, including the large Monarch butterfly migration study, the Insectarium continues to garner world renown for its work.
