Prior to the war, the Canadian Pacific Railway’s Ogden shops in Calgary, Alberta, were primarily used for repairing steam locomotives. Soon after the Second World War broke out, the Canadian Pacific Railway, like many other businesses, converted its shops to manufacturing items in support of the war effort. The 12 pounder, 40 Calibre, QF (quick-firing), HAILA, Mk. V Gun was one of the naval weapons produced by the Ogden shops. Nick-named the "Ogden 3", over 1000 of these guns were produced in the railway’s Ogden shops in Calgary. These guns were installed as the main armament on most Canadian minesweepers fitted as secondary armament on many frigates, and were also mounted on several merchant ships. These weapons were extremely important to the Allied success in the Battle of the Atlantic.
