North American Indigenous Games: The Sacred Run

Based on the Sacred Runs that have been held in recent years, some think that there should be more while others believe that limits are required before they are allowed in their community. Like many things in life, a Sacred Run has both advantages and disadvantages, and it is the disadvantages that have caused debate. In some instances, a Sacred Run can have beneficial side-effects, such as road repairs which make it easier for the runners to run. Another benefit is the publicity that a Sacred Run gives communities, often resulting in an arrival of tourists who wish to be close to the runners or to watch part of the run. Motels, hotels, restaurants and service stations benefit from Sacred Runs and the profits are considerable.

On the other hand, the garbage left behind by unscrupulous people can have a negative impact on the environment. Some roads might be blocked if the run is a major one. Prices at some motels, hotels and service stations may be raised because of the increase in business. The disruption created by fans and the encouragements shouted by the crowd can also be a source of problems, particularly if the run is being held in a small community or village.

For almost 30 years, the custom of carrying a message has once again become very popular around the world. One of the main organizers of these runs, Mr. Dennis J. Banks a Native American from Minnesota in the United States, is the founder of Sacred Run Foundation Inc.,which was established in 1978. The first annual multicultural Sacred Run was held in California, from Davis to Los Angeles, a distance of 805 Kilometers (500 miles). The message carried by the runners was "All Life is Sacred". Other runs organized by Mr. Banks have been held mainly in Canada and the United States, but also in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Russia and Japan.
