Within a larger global context of England’s war with the United States of America, those who had supported England during the Revolution found themselves displaced in 1783. Transported north by the thousands to British North America, individuals such as Edward Winslow welcomed the opportunity to create a new and improved system of governance – that which would be, in his words: “The most gentleman-like on earth”. The key question to ask will be how successful was the system of government which was established - measuring the rights of the individual vs. the collective rights of groups within society. What consideration was given for those who had already occupied the geographical area now controlled by this new government – in particular, Acadian, Maliseet, Mi’kmaq and Passamaquoddy groups?
