MacLaren Art Centre

The MacLarenArtCentre is Simcoe County's regional public art gallery. Located in downtown Barrie, Ontario, the MacLaren is housed in a 24,000 square-foot award-winning building that combines a renovated 1917 Carnegie library and a contemporary addition. The complex includes multiple galleries, visible storage, an education centre, a sculpture courtyard, as well as the Radio Café, Gallery Shop and Framing services. The MacLaren presents a year-round programme of local, regional, national and international exhibitions of contemporary art, complemented by occasional exhibitions of historical and modern art and an extensive public education programme. The MacLaren houses a permanent collection, including a unique archive of vintage Soviet press photographs.

Beaux-arts

The collection began in 1987 with the donation of the Spirit Catcher by Ron Baird; it was this important donation that got Barrie's first public art gallery off the ground. The collection didn't grow again until Maurice MacLaren bequeathed his property on Toronto Street and his collection of art in 1989. Over the next several years the collection grew with several modest donations. The growth of the collection exploded in 1997 in preparation for the facility which has several areas dedicated to the collection including a Prints and Drawings Room and a Display Archive.
In 2001, the MacLaren received a significant donation of the Sovfoto archive comprised of 23,116 vintage press photographs dating from between 1936-1957 representing the history of the former Soviet Union.
