Dedicated to preserving the heritage and culture of the Inuit, Inuvialuit, Dene, Metis, and non-aboriginal peoples of the Canadian Arctic and Subarctic, the Northern Heritage Centre houses the territorial museum, the Northwest Territories Archives, and many programs which extend into most of the sixty-one communities of the Northwest Territories.

Renseignements sur les collections

The Heritage Centre has a diverse collection of approximately 100,000 objects that represent the history of aboriginal and non-indigenous peoples, the flora and fauna, and the geology of the Northwest Territories. The division is one of two repositories in Canada for artifacts collected under permit by archaeologists from the Northwest Territories. The archaeology collections, both historic and prehistoric, comprise the bulk of the material housed at the Centre. The NWT Archives holdings include over 250,000 historical photographs of the Northwest Territories, 5,000 hours of sound recordings (primarily oral history), and 400 motion pictures, as well as, 400 linear metres or 1200 linear feet of textual materials.
