The Red Indian Lake Heritage Society Inc. is a community organization dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Millertown and Red Indian Lake's historic past and place in the history of Newfoundland. To preserve and protect the regional historic resources of the Beothuk who were the last aboriginal inhabitants on the shores of Red Indian Lake. Develop and display the history of logging from the pine forest that brought Lewis Miller to its shores and the changing nature of logging for the past one hundred years. Create an interactive digital tour of Millertown in transition since 1889, Newfoundland's first and only logging community built on the shores of Red Indian Lake.

Our collection of 500 - 1000 items are a series of items donated over the years are in the process of evaluation and classification. Recent pieces are being forwarded to the Newfoundland museum for their assistance in this process. An archaeological evaluation of the Lewis Miller town site is being planned to retrieve additional items that were observed when the water level of the lake was below normal during August and September of 2004. A photographic survey of the town site was done this past summer as reference for the completion of that project.

Archives

Our first photographic collection dates back to the late 1900's when Lewis Miller had built the original town site and the sawmill site was under construction. It also includes a series of Lewisporte photographs and Crief, Scotland, which are in the process of identification. The second photographic collection is of the Anglo Newfoundland Development Co., Ltd. venture in 1925 - 1927 when the town site was moved from Sabbath Point to its present location. This venture included the construction of Exploits Dam thus raising the level of Red Indian Lake some fifteen feet and flooding the Lewis Miller town site location.

We have a collection of historic photographs of Millertown and the Lewis Miller sawmill operation which are presently being researched and classified and are available in lieu of collaboration with those willing to assist in the process. We are also developing an in depth study of Beothuk life at Indian Point and on the shores of Red Indian Lake. We are also working with the Exploits Valley Heritage Council to have all regional points of interest promoted at each location in the region.

On completion of the research an education DVD of the information compiled will be completed for presentation and distribution to educational facilities.

A regular Newsletter is being circulated as a major source for volunteers are residence with family ties and all those once lived or worked in the region over the past one hundred years. Promotional items are sold to finance the societies work and members are the major source of revenue.
