Renseignements sur les collections

Estevan Art Gallery & Museum's exhibitions, programs and activities are developed and facilitated to enhance its mandate. As a dual mandate facility (arts & heritage) the EAGM's collections are comprised of two distinct components; a Fine Arts collection, and a collection of NWMP/RCMP artifacts and local history artifacts.

EAGM's heritage component of it's mandate instructs us to encourage involvement in the dissemination and development of cultural & heritage materials with other communities in Saskatchewan & Canada. To increase physical access for the people of Estevan and Region to their local, provincial, national and international heritage. To display and interpret exhibitions, both self-generated and those received from other sources, of a historic nature to the public.

The EAGM's artifacts collection consists of artifacts that are related to the North West Mounted Police and the 1874 March West from Roche Percee to Estevan. This collection includes the historic Detachment Barrack (oldest known detachment barrack in Saskatchewan). Artifacts housed in the NWMP Museum consist of; buttons from the NWMP tunic's, nails found in the building and on-site, RCMP uniforms, rifles, arrowheads, riding gear, photographs and other paraphernalia related to law & order on the prairies in the 1870's +
Although the Detachment Barracks are only open during the summer season,(the EAGM is responsible for maintaining and housing the artifacts year round), this exchange of heritage materials fulfills the EAGM's mandate to increase access to our heritage, and to display artifacts and offer interpretive text and panels depicting the trek of the NWMP of 1874. The NWMP Detachment Barracks houses and displays artifacts for public appreciation and knowledge
As part of the EAGM's mandate as a gallery/museum, the collections are actively used for the advancement of life-long learning in arts, culture and heritage. Exhibiting NWMP Museum artifacts demonstrates the EAGM's commitment to fostering knowledge of our local and regional history, mapping out Saskatchewan's historic contribution in Canadian history.
Enhancing this collection, is a recent donation of Andrew King's (former resident of Estevan and internationally established poster printer) printing blocks, prints and travel trunks. This particular collection is also considered Heritage Material (recognized by the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation and appraised by Richard Spafford, accredited appraiser: National Archive Appraisal Board).

The EAGM's fine arts collection consists of original prints/paintings donated to the Centre by the Saskatchewan Arts Board. These original works are from well-known Saskatchewan/Canadian Printmakers & Painters such as: David Thauberger, Ernest Lindner, Michael Lonechild, Doris Wall-Larsen, Ronald Bloore, etc.

Also donated to the permanent collection is work by one of Saskatchewan's most well-established ceramicists, Victor Cicanski.

Enhancing this collection, is a recent donation of Andrew King (former resident of Estevan and internationally established poster printer) printing block, prints and travel trunks.

Andrew King collection:
Andrew King was Canada's only “circus poster printer” and was the first man in Canada to engrave wood blocks from which multi-coloured pictorial posters were produced. King's businesses Enterprise Show Print and King Show Print were integral to the growth and development of Canada's printing history, nationally and internationally.
Andrew King's poster production businesses are intrinsic in our local and regional history, popular culture and are a rare art-form. King's printing enterprise reached out across a continent, bringing together spectators, audiences and families to listen to Chautauquas lecturers, watch theatrical groups, witness trapeze acts, lion tamer acts, daredevil shows, participate in agricultural & 4H events, midways and rodeos all under the "Big Top" of the travelling circus. This “Big Top” culture stems from the very roots of Canadian social, economic and geographical history; 1919 - 1958: was the time of small town Fairs, the dirty thirties, the end of the Second World War, and prohibition to mention a few, maps a portion of Canadian history.

Programmes Éducatifs

School Gallery Tours facilitated by our Gallery Educator, includes hands-on activities as a way of developing, and nurturing our youth (our future audiences, volunteers, Board members, donors, etc.). Tours introduce the students to the visual arts and increase their ability to analyze using visual literacy. School tours are curriculum based, often covering many subjects such as history, geography, English and of course visual arts. The visual arts compliment our educational systems, acting as a tool to change perceptions and perceived thoughts, creating a positive outlet for expression and growth.
The Art Appreciation Bus is another component of our Gallery Education program. Students from schools in the Estevan and surrounding areas travel to Regina to visit a variety of galleries and the Department of Art & Art History, U of R, to learn first hand the opportunities available for their growth and development in visual arts as well as a further understanding of contemporary art practice and arts appreciation in Saskatchewan. Interpreting the tour is our Gallery Educator, participating school art instructors and also staff at each destination.
