About the Collections
The Manitoba Museum is committed to increasing awareness and appreciation of Manitoba's heritage through the acquisition, preservation and display of artifacts. Humanities collections are assembled and cared for by curators, conservators and collections managers in secure, state-of-the-art laboratories and storage facilities. Artifacts and the stories they tell are used for research, gallery and exhibit development, public programming and as educational teaching aids. The collections include: Archaeology; Social History; North American Ethnology; Hudson's Bay Company Collection
The Manitoba Museum's Natural History collections are developed and maintained as a 'specimen library' of plants, animals, fossils, rocks and minerals for the province. Specimens are used for reference and research, in public and school programs, and in exhibitions.
More than 200,000 specimens are stored in secure, climate-controlled conditions. As the provincial repository, a large portion of the Museum's collections is Manitoba material, but there are also many significant specimens from other parts of the world.
Approximate number of objects in the collections: 2,000,000

The Library houses more than 20,000 books and subscribes to more than 300 journals and newsletters. The Archives houses more than 150 cubic metres of material. The Library is open to Museum Members and the public by appointment.

Educational Programs
Education Programs foster the exploration of history, social studies, science and astronomy in an environment like no other. The largest classroom in the province, the Museum is visited annually by nearly 100,000 students and their teachers who polish soapstone, learn about dinosaurs, relive the great Canadian fur trade, set sail aboard the Nonsuch, discover the universe, experiment in the Science Gallery, and so much more. Thousands of students visit the Museum throughout the school year to enjoy a self-guided tour, and thousands more participate in English and French curriculum-based, staff-developed programs delivered by department staff and volunteers.
Interactive, hands-on English and French Education Programs are offered in the Museum Galleries featuring history, natural sciences and social studies themes; in the areas of astronomy and space science at the Planetarium; and in the exploration of scientific principles including physics, biology, technology and illusion at the Science Gallery.
