The Millet and District Museum and Archives is located on the west side of Highway 2A at the north end of the Town of Millet, which is located about 40 minutes south of Edmonton.
The Upper Level of the Museum features a permanent exhibit, "From a Signpost in a Slough" that depicts the history of Millet from 1900 to ca 1960.
The Helen Moonen Gallery on the lower level consists of the fabrication of three rooms that depict homes of the first half of the 20th century. "Barth's Barbershop", "Kenny Kerr's Office", the "Hillside School" and the "Tool Shed" of the same era are featured as well.
At the back area of the Museum Building, a "Veterans' Wall" is featured on which the pictures of over 200 veterans of World Wars I and II are mounted. It is enhanced by a mural showing Army, Airforce and Navy personnel and activities of each.
About the Collections
The Millet and District Museum and Exhibit Room was built in 1985 as part of the new Millet Town Adminnistration Building. The Millet and District Historical Society generated the funds to have the Museum and Exhibit Room come into existence. The first Exhibit Room displayed the hobby collections of local citizens and was shown in 1985. Local people began to donate artifacts when the Historical Society decided to develop a museum in the downstairs area. Within a few years the museum had become a reality as hundreds of interesting artifacts from Millet and the 13 surrounding school distrists were acquired.
By 1995 it had become evident that more office space and artifact storage space was a necessity, so a much needed new addition was built and funded by the Historical Society. Artifacts now are adequately stored in mobile storage units which were professionaly designed and installed.
The collection consists of artifacts used in Millet and area during the first half of the 20th century. The collection comprises small agricultural artifacts, tools, household furniture, kitchen appliances and utensils, radios, phonographs, lamps, cameras, china, porcelain, cutlery, linens, toys, games, books, trunks, suitcases, children's and adults clothing, sewing machines, weapons, military uniforms, costumes, spinning wheels and musical instruments. Included as well is a collection of rocks and minerals, drill cores, meteorites, prehistoric hammer heads.
Approximate number of objects in the collections: 12000
