The Great Canadian Plains Railway Society collects, preserves, restores, exhibits and interprets artifacts which represent the history and social impact of the "steam" era in southern Alberta and the coal era with emphasis on Galt Railway and the 1890 International Train Station Depot from Coutts/Sweetgrass.

Collection focuses on items from the 1890's - 1920's as they relate to lifestyles of early settlers, steam trains and travel.

Services & Activities

Displays of life and travel in the 1890's are set up in the restored 1890 International Train Station from Coutts, North West Territories, Canada and Sweetgrass, Montana, USA. Guided tours explaining the operations of an early western Canada international port of entry by rail are available. Gift shop, washrooms and facility rentals are also available. The station is an original artifact of the life and times of Sir Alexander Galt, father of confederation.

Research Services

Research services are available during the July and August season. We offer books on the local and rail history of southern Alberta. Fees apply.

Educational Programs

Costumed tour guides provide general tours. A cay camp for children is offered in the summer. Programs are available for school groups by request during the off season.

Visitor Services

Tours of the waiting room, station master's area, baggage handling, Canadian and American Customs areas with displays of life from 1890's & rail travel. We also feature the restoration process of the historic building. There are exterior rail displays available on site as well.

Activities: All aspects of operation - visitor services, collection management, restoration, construction, cleaning and maintenance.

Member Privileges

Members may vote at the Annual General Meeting, members get updates on upcoming events. Membership fees are $20.00 per year, January 1st to December 31st. Family membership is $30.00 per year, January 1st to December 31st. The society encourages people to become actively involved with the society's project, Galt Historic Railway Park and to assist in fund raising by volunteering for bingo's and casino events.

Operations: By Appointment • Seasonal

September - July by appointment
July 1st - September 1st from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Open: The station is open from 11am to 7pm from July 1st to September 1st.

Closed: Tuesday • Wednesday • Thursday
Closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and Easter. Open May 24th celebration, July 1st and the August long weekend.
