Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery
The Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery hosts a varied program of as many as 12 exhibitions a year in the University Centre Exhibition Gallery. These include loan exhibitions, and exhibits drawn from the University's two collections (Maltwood and University) and from the works of students and faculty. The Maltwood Collection in the Maltwood Collection Study Gallery can be viewed either at special openings or by arrangement with the curator. The gallery has been designed as a research and study facility and offers the public a unique opportunity to view museum conservation and preservation procedures first hand.
Renseignements sur les collections
THE UNIVERSITY COLLECTION Since its institution in 1953 under the tenure of Dr. W.H. Hickman, Principal of Victoria College (1953-1963), this collection has grown to over 6,000 items representing the work of contemporary Western Canadian artists, particulary those of British Columbia. Collecting in recent years has concentrated in the graphic arts, reflecting the importance of those media among B.C.'s practicing artists.
THE MALTWOOD COLLECTION This collection of fine, decorative and applied arts is the bequest of English sculptress and antiquarian, Katharine Emma Maltwood, F.R.S.A. (1878-1961). Reflecting the tastes and travels of Mrs. Maltwood and her husband John Maltwood, the collection ranges from Oriental ceramics, costumes and rugs to seventeenth centuryEnglish furniture, Canadian paintings and Katherine Maltwood's own sculptures.
