Haida Heritage Centre at Kaay Llnagaay
Région touristique : Haida Gwaii
The Haida Heritage Centre is dedicated to conserving and making accessible the human and natural history of Haida Gwaii/ the Queen Charlotte Islands through exhibitions, research and public programs. Opened in July 2007, the 53,000 sq.ft., building is located at the site of the old Haida seaside village of Kaay Llnagaay - Sea Lion Town. The Centre's features include the Haida Gwaii Museum, canoe house, performing house, carving shed, the Bill Reid Teaching Centre, a gift shop and cafe. Information and orientations on Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site also take place there. Parks Canada provides daily visitor orientations and evening presentations in one of the classrooms at the Centre. The Centre, which is a series of longhouses connected by interior walkways and fronted by six traditional totem poles representing each of the 14 clans, resembles a Haida seaside village. Exhibits focus on the history, culture and art of the Haida, including contemporary Haida issues and the work of present-day artists.
