The ARC is a natural history museum of Canadian Atlantic fauna, a biodiversity centre, a systematics laboratory, and a provider of scientific service (offering sample processing and specimen identification, training and teaching, scientific advice, and technical literature.

- major components include marine algae, marine invertebrates, aquatic insect larvae, marine fish parasites, marine fishes, fish eggs and larvae (the largest such collection in North America), and deep-sea fishes
- ca. 34,000 catalogued lots, and ca. 190,000 uncatalogued lots
- collections are used for reference, research, biodiversity baseline studies, environmental monitoring, teaching, and display
- specimens are available to visiting researchers or on a loan basis
