Cape Bonavista Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site
Région touristique : Discovery Trail
Cape Bonavista has it all!
Experience the power of the North Atlantic crashing against the rocks. See icebergs, whales and puffins, in their seasons, as they congregate just off the Cape. And there, where it's been since 1843, stands the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse.
Imagine what it was like to live on this rugged point of land when the light in the tower meant the difference between life and death to Newfoundland seafarers.

This was the Lightkeeper's office where he kept track of supplies, maintenance cost, etc. and recorded the weather every two hours during daylight hours. The collection of signal flags, stored there, was used to communicate with passing ships.

The Kitchen was the center of domestic life in the lighthouse. This is where the family spent most of their time when indoors. In the 19th century most lightkeepers lived well. A good salary paid in cash set lightkeepers apart from most people.

Whales visit the shores of Newfoundland in summer months. Cape Bonavista is one of the best places to see them from land. Humpback and Minke whales are the most common species sighted but Fin whales, Orca, Pilot whales and Porpoise have been seen here. The best time to see Whales is from early July to early August.

Cape Bonavista is home to a colony of Atlantic Puffins. This is arguably the most accessible sea bird colony in North America. From our interpretation center you can see them bringing fish to their young and perching outside their burrows. The Puffins come to the Cape around mid May but July is the best time to see them. They leave around the last week in August.
